What Is a Meter Spot and How Do I Get One?

A meter spot is a process in the planning stages of a meter panel upgrade or installation. Getting a meter spot can be fairly easy depending on the extent of the upgrade. Once you obtain a meter spot, you can move forward with upgrading your meter panel.

To get a meter spot for your electrical panel, you'll need to follow a series of steps that typically involve coordination with your local utility company. Here's a general guide:

1. Determine the Need for a Meter Spot

If you're upgrading your electrical meter panel, adding a new service, or making significant changes to your electrical system, you'll likely need a meter spot.

Tip: When calling Edison Or DWP, have your increase in amperage(load) in hand to give the service planner over the phone.

2. Contact the Local Utility Company

Reach out to your local utility company to initiate the process. They will guide you on their specific requirements and procedures. This is usually done through their customer service or construction/engineering department.

3. Submit an Application

The utility company may or may not require you to submit an application. Usually if the new meter panel is 400 amps and larger, this usually requires an application, and also go through city planning. This may include:

  • Project details: Scope of work, type of service (residential/commercial), and load requirements.

  • Site plan: A drawing or blueprint showing the location of the electrical panel and the proposed meter spot.

  • Single line diagram: You will need to provide a single line diagram along with all panel schedules.

4. Site Pre-Planning

The utility company will send a service planner to the property to inspect the location of the existing meter location. They will check for compliance with local codes and regulations, accessibility, and safety. They will then put a sticker on the location of the new meter.

5. Approval and Meter Spot Assignment

Once approved, the utility company will assign a specific meter spot location. This location must be adhered to during installation.

6. Final Documentation

Keep all documentation and approvals on file, as they may be needed for future reference or inspections.

Once you obtain your meter spot location. You can then move forward to applying for an electrical permit with the local AHJ(authority having jurisdiction).

Tips: Consult with a Professional: Consider working with an experienced electrical contractor who is familiar with your local utility company's requirements.

Follow Local Codes: Make sure your installation adheres to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and any local amendments.

These steps can vary depending on the location and the specific requirements of the utility company you're dealing with.
